For products containing dairy, how are the cows treated and fed?

According to Demeter standards:

  • Animal welfare in accordance with its nature and Feeding.
  • Grazing
  • Grass feeding is a priority.
  • Avoiding animal hormones and growth regulators.
  • Cows keep their horns.
  • Priority is given to natural remedies.
  • Minimum 80% of the feed comes from the farm's own Production.

The focus is particularly on the life performance, fitness and health of the animals. In order to ensure that animals develop in accordance with their nature, Demeter therefore consistently avoids, for example, the painful dehorning of cows. The administration of medicines such as antibiotics or hormones is strictly forbidden. In addition, the animals are kept in small herds in order to ensure healthy ranking and social behavior. Care is taken to ensure that the animals can move freely and uninhibitedly - both in their stalls and in the fresh air. As a result, each barn and enclosure are carefully adapted to the individual needs of the different animal species. At the same time Demeter adheres to strict feed standards: 100% of the feed must be organic feed - 2/3 of the feed used must meet the Demeter standards. For Demeter animals on the farm are part of the natural farm organism. Through their manure, which becomes a valuable fertilizer using preparations made from herbs, minerals and cow dung, they provide an improvement in soil fertility.

The most common feeds are hay, green fodder, maize silage, lucerne silage, crushed cereals, grass from grazing, sugar beet pulp, milk performance feed - peeled, mineral feed.

What is the difference between Toddler Drink and say the German Holle Formula?

The US Goat Milk Toddler Drink refers to the same formulation as the EU Goat 3, except that ARA has been added to the US version.

Can I feed my Infant this Toddler Drink?

In theory, the US Toddler Drinks can be fed in the context of complementary feeding after the 6th month since it corresponds to the recipe of a European follow-on milk. However, it is declared differently on the US label and therefore this must not be an official recommendation.

Can I use expired products?

On packaging we say to use it after opening within 2 weeks, in direct consultation we say you also can use it up to three weeks when stored properly (not in the fridge or freezer as it can absorb moisture and spoil more easily). That does not mean that the formula is suddenly bad. But a potential reduced vitamin content after best before date could be detrimental to health especially impact of young babies who do not eat weaning food additionally.

Is Holle Toddler Milk drink Halal certified?

Holle infant and toddler formula are not certified Halal.

The Whey to Casein Ratio in our Holle Toddler Drinks is as follows:

 Goat:

Whey: 20%

Casein: 80%

Process flow chart:

The below are common Q& A’s that have been asked by customers. Below are the responses provided that have been received well by consumers.

Common Q&A

-2 grams of added sugar for what reason would they add more sugar? Only causes harm to the child.

In the USA, it is regulated by law that if you add sugar, you have to declare it as "added sugar".

This does not only mean standard sugar (we never use sucrose), but also lactose. This is on the one hand a classic energy supplier (also contained in breast milk) and on the other hand it is also necessary for the taste. Milk with only maltodextrin or starch would probably be rejected by the babies/children. Therefore, we use small amounts of lactose for the USA recipes.

-Corn Maltodextrin: super dangerous ingredient that is highly processed. The drawbacks outweigh the benefits. Maltodextrin alters gut bacteria. Holle should be ashamed of themselves.

Maltodextrin is a standard carbohydrate mixture made from corn starch and is always used in (European) milk formulas

For ingredients to be used in the USA, they must have GRAS status (generally recognized as safe) and this is the case with maltodextrin.

In addition, there is no known health hazard/potential carcinogenicity.

According to a quick market research of our quality team, Maltodextrin is also used in most infant milks in the USA.

-Sunflower oil, canola oil, vegetable oil: all these oils filled from pesticides as this company claims it is only non-GMO but heavily processed and filled with chemicals. The minute I gave my son one bottle his mood changed dramatically I never seen him fuss and go nuts like this before.

As for the oils, I can only say that they are also necessary. On the one hand, some vitamins cannot be absorbed without a small addition of fat and on the other hand, some fatty acids are very important (and also required by law).

Our oils are all organic and therefore must not contain any pesticides. This is also checked regularly and there have never been any anomalies. Since the products are produced here and the same raw materials are used, this also applies to the USA.

Who else distributes Holle products, infant and toddler dairy?

"Thank you for contacting Holle USA. I'd be happy to assist you with this! The infant formula is not sold in the US market. It was produced for the European market and may not be compliant with FDA requirements. At this time, we carry our toddler milk drinks at Wholefoods Market. We are not affiliated with any 3rd party companies. JSG organics is the official distributor of Holle products in the US."

The whey powder comes from dairies in Germany or the EU.

Partially demineralized whey is used in infant milk formulas with cow's milk. This is obtained from cow's milk, using microbial rennet and natural rennet (=not halal).

The two types of rennet are also used to obtain lactose, which is contained, for example, as an ingredient in infant milk formulas made from goat's milk. Due to the use of natural rennet, infant milk formulae are classified as non-vegetarian according to a generally accepted, but as yet not legally binding definition. Vitamin D, which is obtained from sheep's wool, is added to all infant milk formulas. In addition, fish oil will be used as a source of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid) in Holle infant milk formulas made from cow's milk from February 2020. In contrast, DHA in Holle infant milk formulas made from goat's milk comes from an extract of algae.

I’m wondering if you can tell me if the Holle goat milk is treated at high heat temperatures?

When spray drying dairy products, hot air (between 160 and 205 degrees Celsius, depending on the product) is fed to a drying chamber containing the product concentrate.

Starch/maltodextrin (also from corn) is used in all of Holle’s infant milks, as gluten-free starch is required by law.

What is your B12 and folate derived from?

Both come from synthetic vitamin mixes that are added to our toddler drinks.

The procurement is not with Holle or Organic-Family in this case, but with our suppliers.

Why is your toddler milk drink not organic?

Our US products are produced with the same standards as our European products that carry the EU organic and Demeter label. Unfortunately, the equivalence agreement between Europe and the USA (NOP) does not include animal (incl. dairy) products. This is why we currently can’t use organic/Demeter certificates in the USA.

The Holle organic oats whole grain cereal is NOT gluten-free.

Pure oats can usually be consumed by many people with gluten intolerance. However, contamination of oats with wheat, rye or barley can often occur during harvesting, transportation, storage and processing, so this product is defined as containing gluten. According to the EU Food Information Regulation, oats are classified as a gluten-containing cereal unless the content of gluten does not exceed 20 mg/kg." This cannot be guaranteed for our Holle organic oats.

Today, we have a comprehensive baby food range with more than 80 products. Holle baby food is produced only with pure ingredients grown to biodynamic or EU organic standards.

We do not use chemical processing materials and preservatives, flavouring and colouring agents, added salt or granulated sugar.

Our long-term partnerships with our organic food suppliers are very important to us, they are the basis for the particularly high quality of our baby food.

Holle baby food products are gently processed; they represent a wholesome, natural and balanced diet, from the very beginning.

We understand that deciding what to feed your child is one of the most important decisions you make.

We are honored that parents in over 40 countries turn to Holle for its nutritious and high quality ingredients.

Since 1934, we have been committed to using only the best ingredients to provide babies a healthy start in life.

We bear a special responsibility – for the environment, your children, and their future.

Holle is the first producer of Demeter-quality baby food in the EU, a strict biodynamic certification that goes beyond organic standards in natural, healthy, and sustainable ingredients and farming practices.

We can’t wait for your family to bring Holle into your home so that you can grow up with nature’s best.

Since 1934, Holle has met the highest demands in organic quality. Holle follows a holistic approach, with a goal for the well-being of mankind and nature alike.

Holle guarantees the highest possible safety measures. Holle achieves extraordinarily high quality through consistent and careful organic and biodynamic cultivation of raw materials.

Holle products use only the finest ingredients: grains grown on Demeter-certified biodynamic farms in Germany, rice from Italy, millet grain from Hungary, milk from organic farms in southern Germany, and organic fruit, vegetables, and meat from biodynamic or organic agriculture.

This focus on the foundations ensures the best quality, taste, and nutrition to properly nurture your growing family.

Beyond premium ingredients, Holle's modern production lines in Switzerland, Germany, Italy, and Austria perform seamless control examinations based on the latest scientific research and ISO-certified technology to guarantee quality at every step.

*EU Organic Standard

• Natural farming cycles which do not exploit animals, the soil, or the environment

• Quality vs. quantity

• Animal welfare Avoiding animal hormones and growth regulators

• Natural compost instead of artificial fertilizers

• No chemical pesticides or insecticides

• No chemical additives during processing

As the first Demeter manufacturer of baby foods, Holle has always been closely linked to biodynamic agriculture.

Approximately 80% of our products carry the Demeter seal, the highest standard internationally for holistic, ecological, and ethical practices that take organic farming one step further.

Holle products that bear the Demeter seal are cultivated in accordance with biodynamic guidelines and produced in harmony with nature.

Through the absence of herbicides, chemicals, and synthetic pesticides, an average of 33% more species can be found on biodynamic farms than on conventionally cultivated land.

Demeter farmers focus on the holistic quality of their products by raising their animals in a uniquely humane and caring environment. This includes not removing their horns - a painful procedure for the animal. Horns are involved in a cow's and/or goat's digestive process, and retaining them impacts on the composition of the milk, including keeping high levels of vitamin E, beta carotene, and valuable omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. By keeping their horns in tact, Demeter-raised animals produce wholesome and tasty milk - the ideal base for Holle milk and formulas.

Your child will thrive from a healthy and balanced diet with simple and natural ingredients.

Holle products only use the finest ingredients sourced from EU Demeter-certified, and organic farms.

No pesticides or chemical fertilizers are used to grow our raw ingredients.

Only using biodynamically or organically grown food

We have a close working relationship with our EU Demeter-certified farmers to guarantee a long-term supply of high-quality ingredients.

We ensure our raw ingredients are processed and cooked through an ongoing quality control system guaranteed to be free from genetically modified ingredients never using artificial favors, colors, preservatives, or refined sugar.

Ingredients

Most of our products are gluten free.

Products containing gluten:

• Panda Peach - Contains Spelt Wheat

Holle has been a pioneer in the area of not adding processed sugar.

The company has always avoided granulated sugar, salt, and even natural flavorings in all products for infants.

Science has proven that there is a genetic tendency towards sweet flavors.

Introducing weaning foods can be an advantage if you begin with sweet-tasting vegetable varieties like carrots, pumpkin, and parsnip.

Sugar is not forbidden, but it promotes habituation with sweetness if consumed regularly, leading to obesity.

For this reason, babies should scuttle through the first-year sugar fee.

Holle products primarily rely on natural and mild sweetness from the fruit ingredients.  A conscious decision for the perfect taste experience.

Yes, food allergens are labeled on all Holle FDA-registered imported products.

Holle products imported into the United States with English labels follow the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act ( FALCPA) of 2004.

FALCPA is an amendment to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. It requires that the label of food products containing protein from a "major food allergen" declare the presence of the allergen in the manner described by the law.

This requirement may or may not be on European labeled products that 3rd party importers bring into the USA.

The Holle products now imported into the USA are FDA compliant and FDA registered.

New European regulations for baby food have been in place in Europe since 2016.  Like all other manufactures, Holle was required to implement this regulation for all infant and follow-on products as of February 2020.

This regulation updates existing provisions under the latest scientific knowledge.

Note:In both the EU and the USA, there is an advertising ban on infant formulas to help promote breastfeeding, which is also in line with Holle's attitude.

In terms of composition, DHA is now compulsory for infant formula and follow-on drinks.

DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) is a long-chain polyunsaturated omega3 fatty acid found in breast milk.

Previously adding DHA was optional. With the inclusion becoming compulsory, there is a new minimum standard, which will result in one of the most significant changes to all of our milk recipes.

Holle has adjusted The linoleic acid (LA) and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) content.

Further nutritional specifications have also been modified, including an upper limit for protein and various quantity adjustments for vitamins and minerals.

Imported Holle toddler drinks meet all FDA requirements.

The Holle goat's milk made with full cream makes it possible to dispense with using palm oil.

Along with vegetable oils, goat's milk fat provides the necessary saturated fatty acids, making palm oil redundant.

Holle goat milk, now sold in the USA, offers a good alternative for any parent looking to stop using palm oil.

Yes, the puree pouches are vegan.  They are egg-free and made from fruits and vegetables only.

• The milk quality is strictly controlled and checked from the farm to delivery.  The collection takes place directly at regional goat milk farms, and at supraregional dairy farms, the milk is collected on-site and quickly prepared for transport.

• With this system, Holle can safely meet even stricter requirements for baby food than food production for general consumption.

• In addition to the dairy technology for processing the raw milk, the production process includes concentrating the milk to dry it gently with a spray tower's help.

• The milk powders are packaged in Austria, as noted on our labels.

• The Holle pouches of fruits and vegetables come from Italy in the area of the Dolomites.

• Other products that we will introduce are made in Germany and Spain.

All foreign facilities that manufacture, process, pack, or hold food for human consumption in the United States must register with the FDA.

The FDA code is called 21 CFR 1.227.

Holle products imported into the USA by JSG Organics LLC are all FDA-registered.

Products that come into the USA from "other sources" may not have FDA registration.

Without specific FDA registration, these products are not approved for retail sale in the USA.

It takes time to secure FDA registration, and JSG Organics is working to obtain more product registrations.

Please note that Holle products that do not have FDA registration still meet the highest manufacturing standards globally, but the United States has regulations for imported products for reasons stated above.
