For products containing dairy, how are the cows treated and fed?
According to Demeter standards:
- Animal welfare in accordance with its nature and Feeding.
- Grazing
- Grass feeding is a priority.
- Avoiding animal hormones and growth regulators.
- Cows keep their horns.
- Priority is given to natural remedies.
- Minimum 80% of the feed comes from the farm's own Production.
The focus is particularly on the life performance, fitness and health of the animals. In order to ensure that animals develop in accordance with their nature, Demeter therefore consistently avoids, for example, the painful dehorning of cows. The administration of medicines such as antibiotics or hormones is strictly forbidden. In addition, the animals are kept in small herds in order to ensure healthy ranking and social behavior. Care is taken to ensure that the animals can move freely and uninhibitedly - both in their stalls and in the fresh air. As a result, each barn and enclosure are carefully adapted to the individual needs of the different animal species. At the same time Demeter adheres to strict feed standards: 100% of the feed must be organic feed - 2/3 of the feed used must meet the Demeter standards. For Demeter animals on the farm are part of the natural farm organism. Through their manure, which becomes a valuable fertilizer using preparations made from herbs, minerals and cow dung, they provide an improvement in soil fertility.

Can I use expired products?
On packaging we say to use it after opening within 2 weeks, in direct consultation we say you also can use it up to three weeks when stored properly (not in the fridge or freezer as it can absorb moisture and spoil more easily). Process flow chart:
The below are common Q& A’s that have been asked by customers. Below are the responses provided that have been received well by consumers.
Common Q&A
-2 grams of added sugar for what reason would they add more sugar? Only causes harm to the child.
In the USA, it is regulated by law that if you add sugar, you have to declare it as "added sugar".
This does not only mean standard sugar (we never use sucrose), but also lactose. This is on the one hand a classic energy supplier (also contained in breast milk) and on the other hand it is also necessary for the taste. Milk with only maltodextrin or starch would probably be rejected by the babies/children. Therefore, we use small amounts of lactose for the USA recipes.
-Corn Maltodextrin: super dangerous ingredient that is highly processed. The drawbacks outweigh the benefits. Maltodextrin alters gut bacteria. Holle should be ashamed of themselves.
Maltodextrin is a standard carbohydrate mixture made from corn starch and is always used in (European) milk formulas
For ingredients to be used in the USA, they must have GRAS status (generally recognized as safe) and this is the case with maltodextrin.
In addition, there is no known health hazard/potential carcinogenicity.
According to a quick market research of our quality team, Maltodextrin is also used in most infant milks in the USA.
-Sunflower oil, canola oil, vegetable oil: all these oils filled from pesticides as this company claims it is only non-GMO but heavily processed and filled with chemicals. The minute I gave my son one bottle his mood changed dramatically I never seen him fuss and go nuts like this before.
As for the oils, I can only say that they are also necessary. On the one hand, some vitamins cannot be absorbed without a small addition of fat and on the other hand, some fatty acids are very important (and also required by law).
Our oils are all organic and therefore must not contain any pesticides. This is also checked regularly and there have never been any anomalies. Since the products are produced here and the same raw materials are used, this also applies to the USA.
Who else distributes Holle products, infant and toddler dairy?
"Thank you for contacting Holle USA. I'd be happy to assist you with this! The infant formula is not sold in the US market. It was produced for the European market and may not be compliant with FDA requirements. At this time, we carry our toddler milk drinks at Wholefoods Market. We are not affiliated with any 3rd party companies. JSG organics is the official distributor of Holle products in the US."
The whey powder comes from dairies in Germany or the EU.
Partially demineralized whey is used in infant milk formulas with cow's milk. This is obtained from cow's milk, using microbial rennet and natural rennet (=not halal).
The two types of rennet are also used to obtain lactose, which is contained, for example, as an ingredient in infant milk formulas made from goat's milk. Due to the use of natural rennet, infant milk formulae are classified as non-vegetarian according to a generally accepted, but as yet not legally binding definition. Vitamin D, which is obtained from sheep's wool, is added to all infant milk formulas. In addition, fish oil will be used as a source of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid) in Holle infant milk formulas made from cow's milk from February 2020. In contrast, DHA in Holle infant milk formulas made from goat's milk comes from an extract of algae.
I’m wondering if you can tell me if the Holle goat milk is treated at high heat temperatures?
When spray drying dairy products, hot air (between 160 and 205 degrees Celsius, depending on the product) is fed to a drying chamber containing the product concentrate.
Starch/maltodextrin (also from corn) is used in all of Holle’s infant milks, as gluten-free starch is required by law.
What is your B12 and folate derived from?
Both come from synthetic vitamin mixes that are added to our toddler drinks.
The procurement is not with Holle or Organic-Family in this case, but with our suppliers.
Why is your toddler milk drink not organic?
Our US products are produced with the same standards as our European products that carry the EU organic and Demeter label. Unfortunately, the equivalence agreement between Europe and the USA (NOP) does not include animal (incl. dairy) products. This is why we currently can’t use organic/Demeter certificates in the USA.
The Holle organic oats whole grain cereal is NOT gluten-free.
Pure oats can usually be consumed by many people with gluten intolerance. However, contamination of oats with wheat, rye or barley can often occur during harvesting, transportation, storage and processing, so this product is defined as containing gluten. According to the EU Food Information Regulation, oats are classified as a gluten-containing cereal unless the content of gluten does not exceed 20 mg/kg." This cannot be guaranteed for our Holle organic oats.
